Charnwood Writers - PRM, 28/Aug/11

Hand Writing

Charnwood Writers has been running for more than twenty-five years. It was re-established in 1994, by Charnwood Arts, to provide support and encouragement for creative writers living and working in the Charnwood area.

Programme

Who are they?

Charnwood Writers is a small friendly group, which has met informally, with no subscription requested. It has depended on the support given by volunteers, and has usually met in accommodation for which no charge has been required.

When do they meet?

Currently the group is not meeting on a regular basis. Due to a fall-off in attendance the monthly 'Sunday Writers' sessions, which were held at Loughborough Library, on the third Sunday, have been suspended.

What do they do?

At these meetings writers have shared work in progress; they read their work, and received support, advice and criticism. Details of competitions, markets, etc, are still being circulated to those interested via email (at present thirty individuals). As in the past, there will be an opportunity for local poets to take part in National Poetry Day 2011. This year the theme is "Games". A display of work submitted is to appear at Loughborough Public Library, Granby Street during October 2010.

In the past we have had workshops led by established writers and poets. If we can re-establish a regular support group of interested creative writers, these will start again. Also, as in the past, we will have talks by well-known authors.

"Rhymes and Wine" is currently being held monthly at "The Swan in the Rushes", in the centre of town, opposite the Amber Bar and Cafe, Swan Street (A6), Loughborough, on the first Sunday evening, from 8.15pm. Sessions usually run until around 10 o'clock. Deborah Tyler-Bennett, a poet and editor of "Coffee House", is now leading this opportunity for writers to read their own poetry and short prose. Please check with The Swan in the Rushes for any change of date.
